Quiznos Revisited

Monday, September 25th, 2006

It’s been more than a year that we’ve all been ranting and raving about Quiznos not publicising their nutritional information. Well, along comes Yoni, an Ottawa-based nutrition blogger with a great blog (bmimdecial.blogspot.com).
He recently posted an entry pointing to Quiznos nutritional information in Australia.
I still don’t know the calorie count of my chicken carbonara […]

Ottawa Foodies

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

So… I haven’t been contributing to this blog much over the past half year or so. The reason? Well I’ve been spending my spare computer time working on a new-concept restaurant/food review site for Ottawa. Tonight I’m making it available to the general public. Check it out!

Spices as Preservatives

Sunday, March 5th, 2006

I’ve always had some idea that people in hot climates eat spicy food because it helps prevent spoilage. Not sure where I got this idea, but there you have it. Research topic!
It turns out that various spices do in fact have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, but the level of protection is NOT related […]

The Secret Ingredient for Perfect Bread

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

Bread plays a major role in the daily life of so many cultures, including the North American one. Even the lowly baloney sandwich relies on bread for whatever appeal it can muster. However (and contrary to the international stereotype), not all bread in North America is of the cotton-wool pre-sliced variety!

Nestle, Kraft, and Unilever own most of our food brands!

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

I’ve been doing some research recently into a question that interests me as a consumer:
How many of the brands we see in grocery stores are sub-brands of well known companies?
Here’s what I found. There are three huge international food companies that own a whole whack of the brands we see in our grocery stores.

Is Quizno’s hiding nutritional information?

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

I ate an evil, greasy sandwich (chicken carbonara) for lunch at Quizno’s today and naturally wanted to find out how much fat I had eaten. I was surprised to find that their website only lists nutritional information for three menu items:

Small Sierra Smoked Turkey with Raspberry Chipotle Sauce
Small Honey Bourbon Chicken
Small Turkey Lite

A quick search […]

Sugar vs. Artificial Sweeteners - which is better?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

In this post, I share information that leads me to believe that a little bit of sugar is better than a lot of artificial sweetener.
Table sugar has 4 calories per gram (15 calories per teaspoon). This is the same as other carbohydrates and protein. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories […]

Is Organic Always Better?

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

There is a big consumer trend towards buying organic products whenever possible. Organic foods are safer, tastier, and more nutritious than the old non-organic stuff, right? Well, it turns out that the answer is not so clear. In the land of nutrition and food science it never really is!

Organic Fruits and Vegetables
It’s common sense that […]

Light Iced Tea (no artificial sweeteners)

Friday, May 27th, 2005

I like iced tea with just a little bit of sugar to take the edge off the bitterness. The only way to get this is by brewing it myself, and I’m usually far too lazy to do that. I had sent the folks at Tetley an email a year ago telling them that it would […]
